Hyun Joong & Hwang Bo
in our course of life, there are some particular movies, particular songs or TV shows that no matter how many times we watch or play, they still have this magical power to flutter our hearts. they may not be the best movies ever produced or the best songs ever written, but they can still move us all the same.
simply because they were with us during certain periods of our life, just like an imaginary friend who has been there to witness our growth and somehow become part of the reason why we are who we are today.
that friend of mine, in my high school years, was We got married the 1st season (up to Joongbo’s last episode).
until now, sometimes when I re-watch this show, it still feels as though I am living in the year 2008, excitedly looking forward to every Sunday so that I can laugh and cry along with those ‘fake’ yet very real married couples, and at the same time learn a lesson or two about relationships.
back then I was still a young and foolish teenage girl who was full of curiosity about love. now that years has gone by, though I am still no expert in this field, the curiosity of that long-gone innocent youth is no longer there. but the vibrant feelings this show arouses in me whenever I press the play button somehow manage to remain unchanged. perhaps the only difference between now and then is the nostalgic atmosphere that comes along after I get off this time machine and start to reminisce on those salad days.
among the original couples, this seemingly awkward yet in fact very loving couple is my all time favorite. a quirky, optimistic, bright and fun to be around husband, Hyun Joong. a boyish, strong-willed but also feminine and caring wife, Hwang Bo. I love them for their cute but non-mushy ways to express their feelings towards each other, their always-hilarious conversations, and all the moments they had together. as I watched them from a young age, their on-screen marriage has drastically changed my vision of love and relationships, and how I’d like to live when I get married in the future.
people may laugh at me and say, a TV show is just a TV show, there is nothing real about that. but for me, it all depends on our own interpretation, and the meanings we make from that. some may treat it merely as a source of entertainment and gain nothing but some laughter from that. but I see it as a lighthouse that guided me through the confused years of my youth. and for that, it will forever hold a special place in my heart.
thank you for having been there.
I remember back in 2009 after their farewell, there was some speculation that they were dating briefly irl but there was not enough proof. Hyunjoong also said in some show a couple years ago that he dated a female celebrity for 5 months out in the open (he went places with her, went fishing, etc) and quite surprised it never made the news since he was sure many people have seen them.
Now that I just re-watched their parts again, I saw this line and it got me thinking, he could have said “married” but instead he said “dated” … so idk. A part of me wanted to believe that it was true but I guess it doesn’t matter anymore since it was all in the past.
makes sense! ;)
If you could only watch 1 WGM couple…
Joongbo/Ssangchu would be the best choice.
"I don’t think of her as being older then me or a noona anymore, in fact, our age gap is getting smaller and smaller." -Hyunjoong
I will always be a huge fan of JoongBo couple from Season 1 of WGM. There has been no other couple like them since.
